Ocean stars in Addis Ababa, thousands of Somalis occupy Addis streets

Thousands of cheering chanting Somalis have occupied streets in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa as the Somali National Football team landed at Addis airport on Sunday afternoon.

The Jubilant fans holding up the blue Somali lag and carrying wet leaves have been standing along the road linking the hotel where the team was based to the airport since early morning.

“Somalis wake up wake up and unite always helping weak ones among you” the jubilant Somalis were announcing.

Ahmed Ali Hassan a leading figure in the Somali community in Ethiopia told the media that his community was very sorry for the goalless draw at home yesterday—“Now we want to beat them at home and we have high hopes although in football you can will or lose” the community leader said.

“Today Addis Ababa became like Mogadishu, you can see Somalis waving our flag everywhere—we pray to Allah to give us the upper hand” he noted.

On Wednesday the 16th of November the Somali National team will encounter its Ethiopian counterpart in the second leg of the preliminary round of the 2014 FIFA world cup qualifying clashes.

Somali-Ethiopia WC qualifier clash ends in goalless draw

The first leg of the 2014 FIFA world cup qualifier clash between Somali and Ethiopian has ended in a goalless draw at the Guled Stadium in Djibouti on Saturday afternoon.

During the hotly-contested match each side made many scoring attempts, but all lost golden opportunities.

A little while before the end of the first half Somalia’s striker Isse Abshir lost a very important scoring chance, like wise Ethiopia lost the same chance before the end of the first half when Somali goal keeper Khaled Ali Mursal survived a ball that many thought to have got into Somalia’s goal net .

Hundreds of thousands of Somali-Ethiopian fans around the world were watching the match on the Djibouti government’s television the RTD. Likewise the Nairobi-based Bar-kulan radio and the Mogadishu-based radio Shabelle were broadcasting the match live.

In Mogadishu streets thousands o fans have been seen while having small radios on their ears listening to what was being broadcasted live from Al-Hajji Hassan Guled Stadium in Djibouti.

However the Somali National football team is due to travel to Addis Ababa on Sunday in preparations for the second match of the preliminary qualifying clashes which will be held in Addis Ababa on 15th of November.

Somali Football Federation used the neighboring Djibouti as its home country since it cannot host international matches in the country because of security reasons.
