Operation Atalanta Warship ITS Espero Conducts Maritime Training with Team from Bossaso Port Police

On Saturday 13 May 2017, EU Naval Force’s Italian warship, ITS Espero, welcomed representatives from the Bossaso Port Police (BPP) on board whilst at sea conducting counter-piracy operations.

As well as protecting World Food Programme humanitarian aid vessels, key roles for Operation Atalanta are to deter armed pirates from attacking ships as they transit along the coast of Somalia and to help EU sister mission, EUCAP Somalia, train regional forces to help develop maritime capabilities.

Following their successful hosting of the Somali Prime Minister and the EU Ambassador to Somalia on Monday,
sailors and marines from EU NAVFOR’s Spanish flagship, ESPS Galicia, have been assisting staff from EUCAP
Somalia, to train members of the Somali maritime police unit together with the AMISOM’s marine unit at sea off
the coast of Mogadishu.

On Monday 8 May 2017 the European Union’s Ambassador to Somalia, Ms Veronique

Lorenzo, hosted the Somali Prime Minister, H.E. Hasan Ali Khaire and State Minister, Abdullahi Hamud, on board EU NAVFOR’s Spanish flagship, ESPS Galicia.
Ms Lorenzo was accompanied by EU NAVFOR’s Operation Commander, Major General  Rob Magowan CBE, the Head of the EU Capacity Building Mission EUCAP Somalia,

Maria-Christina Stepanescu, and the Mission Commander for the EU Training Mission to Somalia, Brigadier Maurizio Morena.

Europe Day Marked in Mogadishu

Mogadishu, May 9 – The EU marked Europe Day in Mogadishu together with Somali and International Partners. This year's Europe Day celebrations coincide with the 60th anniversary of
the Rome Treaties that laid the foundations for the European Union of today.

This year, the EU is also celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the ERASMUS student exchange program, considered one of the most successful EU programmes. Several Somali students have received scholarships under the ERASMUS Mundus programme for post-graduate students from outside Europe.
