al-Shabab claims responsibility for attack on hotel in Mogadishu
Militant Islamist group al-Shabab has taken responsibility for an attack on the Muna hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia that killed 32 people, including six MPs. Dressed as government soldiers, militants shot the hotel’s guard and rampaged through the building for about an hour, killing guests. A suicide bomber then blew himself up. al-Shabab aims to overthrow the African-Union-backed transitional government so it can impose Islamic rule.

 The meeting of ACP-EU representatives in the Seychelles has noted in its final communiqué the need for solutions to the crisis in Somalia to note the realities in Somaliland amongst others.

Meeting in the Seychelles over the course of 14-15 July 2010, the joint parliamentary assembly of African, Caribbean, and Pacific and European Union countries discussed issues of key concern to East Africa, with a focus on the ongoing insecurity facing Somalia and associated offshore piracy.

NAIROBI - The United Nations and foreign missions and organisations will move back inside Somalia within two months after an absence of more than 17 years, a senior U.N. official said on Sunday.
Most embassies, foreign charitable organisations and the United Nations itself have been based in Nairobi because of security concerns in most of Somalia and near-daily gun battles and mortar attacks in the capital, Mogadishu.
The U.N. left Somalia in 1993 and most embassies withdrew years earlier.
Augustine Mahiga, the U.N. special representative for the Horn of Africa country, said a decision to relocate senior staff to Somalia had been taken by U.N Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon.

It’s unfortunate and sad news that Siraanyo four days old government has indiscriminately opened live ammunition to democratically innocent protesting citizens of Somaliland in Awdal and Salal Regions. The incident occurred in the city of Borama and other cities in those regions. The protesters claiming that the troops fired on civilians shouted slogans on denouncing Siraanyo new government cabinet ministers.
